New York City Courtyard, Before and After
Dark and cavernous but precious outdoor space to a Manhattan co-op, this area was transformed from an eyesore into a pleasant courtyard park for the residents. Large containers hold birch trees and flowers, giving the space a French country garden feel.
Dry Stream Bed, Westchester County, New York
This dry stream bed is a creative solution to a drainage problem. Formerly, there was a drainage pipe to collect runoff transecting the back yard. The drainage pipe is still there, but we covered the pipe with decorative river rock, fieldstones and plantings to transform an eyesore into a focal point. This 60-foot long dry stream bed still serves its purpose running water away from the house.

Manhattan Townhouse, Before and After
Neglected for nearly 40 years, this townhouse garden was totally renovated. The fence was replaced, the stone patios repaired and the gardens installed. It now contains birch, dogwood and cherry trees as well as many flowering shrubs and spring bulbs. All materials were carried into the yard through the house!

This revolution-era farmhouse had many new additions but lost its main entrance to a busy street. A new, substantial stone front landing was added, with benches on each side to add symmetry and signal the visitor to the entry. A stone wall with a pergola above hides utilities and adds dimension and style to the façade of the house.

The plywood entry stairs were removed and replaced with a fieldstone landing and steps. The walk matches the landing and is pulled away from the house to make room for more foundation plantings. Old weed trees were removed and replaced by lower ornamentals and evergreens.

Urban Terrace Garden
This terrace has plenty of square footage but is, typically, very narrow. Tall slender Leyland Cypress provide lush greenery to frame the breathtaking views while taking up very little floor space. Cedar containers hold all of the plants and are painted to give a nod to a formal French parterre.

New Stone Entry, Pound Ridge, NY
The renovation of this stately home caused the back of the house to become the main entry and the front to become the family entrance. This unique entry is circular and pulls visitors in from the motor court to an attractive round space presenting them with stone paths to different parts of the property.

A storybook ’30’s home in Chappaqua, NY was revitalized by the addition of a classic English Country Garden design. It’s what I call an “inside and out” garden. This garden has four seasons of interest and looks great from inside the house as well as outside.

Asian Gravel Garden

The view from the living room of a newly renovated Arts and Crafts style home was this sad courtyard. We decided upon a simple, low-maintenance Asian Gravel Garden showcasing a plinth with a favorite sculpture.

Expanding Possibilities

A very narrow deck limited the use of the outdoor space of this renovated home. By adding a semi-circular patio with a seat wall for dining and entertaining, the owners now have plenty of room to entertain and access their lovely back yard.

The Proper Proportion
Before and After
The addition of a second story to this home suddenly dwarfed the existing hardscape and old plantings. We tripled the size of the front entry patio and created a wide and welcoming front walk for guests. The circular landing is a lovely device to break up the long walk and to linger and enjoy the new plantings.
